State Police have charged 34-year-old Timothy Wellons of Salem with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and DUI following a crash on I-581 in Roanoke on Wednesday, according to ABC 13.
The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday and initially closed all lanes of I-581 at mile marker 3. All but one of the southbound lanes re-opened to traffic this Thursday morning. VDOT hopes to open the remaining lane this afternoon after repairing pavement.
Two people were killed in the crash, and two people were taken to the hospital. Two others were not injured. Investigators had reported to ABC 13 that the driver of one vehicle was going north on I-581 and made a sudden move in front of a tractor trailer. The tractor trailer ended up in the median and then in the southbound lane where it hit another tracter trailer. Three cars behind the southbound tractor trailer were also involved in the collision.
Our prayers to those recovering and to the families of those involved.
