Sinkhole UPDATE: One lane of 460 East will remain closed today in Bedford in the area in front of the Applebee’s and across from Walmart because of a sinkhole that opened up on Sunday.
Officials say a stormwater pipe came apart underneath the road and eventually caused the 5 foot wide hole that’s 6 feet deep. It was the water leaking from that pipe that caused the ground underneath the highway to erode.
Crews filled the hole Monday and will continue to make road repairs today.
Monday: Part of a major road is closed this morning because of a SINKHOLE!
460 East in Bedford in front of the Applebee's is closed until repairs can be made, possibly by sometime tomorrow. Applebee's is across the road from Walmart.
The sinkhole is about 5- feet wide and 6-feet deep.
ABC 13 reported that State Police received a call about the sinkhole from the driver of a tractor trailer who said his truck nearly flipped over after he drove over the hole yesterday afternoon in the 4 o'clock hour.
VDOT is investigating what caused the sinkhole. Some speculated it could be the result of a broken water line.
